The business of movie-making as they say:

Is Glamorous on the outside, Gamble on the inside

Is Exciting on the outside, Uncertain on the inside

Is Challenging on the outside, Unforeseeable on the inside

Not any more – Movie makers in Tollywood have now risen above the realms of sheer luck to predict the future of their movies. Who helps them do this – Analytics!

We met up with the production team for the latest Tolly blockbuster Mandobasar Galpo and the producer Mr Akash Jalan share his insights on how he used Analytics for his movie #Mandobasar Galpo:

What aspects of the business are very data-driven:

Nowadays, all decisions in the movies, as in the other industries, are data driven! The producers, with a given budget, depend on the data to make the following decisions:

  1. What genre of movie to make – comedy, thriller, action, etc
  2. Start cast – basis their history of hits, flops, box office collection, awards in any given genre
  3. Date of film release basis past trends and current competition
  4. Which channels to use for marketing
  5. How many and which theaters to release the movie in
  6. Estimating revenue from 1st day/week ticket sales and hence pre-planning of rights distribution to TV etc and many more.

And mind you these are all interrelated and interlinked. The commonly used analytics models in the movie and entertainment industry are:

  1. Multiple Linear Regression Model – E.g – Which factors influence the box office collections and by how much?
  2. Logistic Regression – E.g – Will the movie succeeds or not with a given combination of genre, actors, director, no. of songs, Switzerland scenes, etc?
  3. Time Series – E.g – to forecast the future box office collection based on past week trends
