In the 1st part of this series we gave you a macro view of “What to be prepared for” during an Analytics Interview.

The 2nd part gives you some examples of case studies/puzzle questions which you can practice and get an idea of the type of questions during the interview. This is the “hands-on” bit of practicing for an Analytics Interview!

Written test –

Example 1

2 containers labelled A and B are filled with red and blue marbles in given quantities: –
Container      RED      BLUE
A                         6             4
B                       60            40
Each container is shaken vigorously. After choosing 1 of the container, without looking, draw out a marble. From which container you have the maximum probability of choosing a blue marble?

Ans. –

(a) Container A (6 red, 4 blue)
(b) Container B (60 red, 40 blue)
(c) Equal chances from each container.

Example 2

For 1 month, 500 elementary students kept a daily record of the no. of hours of watching television. The average no. of hours per week spent watching television was 28 hours. Researchers conducting the study also obtained report cards for each of the students. It was found that the students, who did well in school spent less time watching television and those who spent more time, did poorly. Listed below several possible statements concerning the research. Place a check on the statement that is definitely not true.

Ans-

(a) the students who watch television more performed poorly.
(b) If the students will not watch television their performance will improve.

Interview –

As we discussed last time, interviews can be a mix of personal questions and case base discussions. See a few examples of strategy based questions:

Example 1

Your client is a large passenger cruise line company. It’s considering whether to invest $250 million in a new, 1,500-person passenger ship. The CEO of the company has recently declared publicly that he hopes to deliver 10 percent returns on all major investments. Help the client determine if this is a good investment.

Example 2

Your client is the head product manager in the sports division of a major online auction company. He has brought you in to help diagnose why his division’s profitability is declining and to determine ways to improve the performance
