What are the career prospects?

Actuaries work in a wide range of areas like life insurance, general insurance, pensions and employee benefits, health insurance, reinsurance companies, investment, consultancies and risk management.

What is the duration for the course?

There is no fixed duration of the course. Ideally if pursued dedicatedly the course could be completed in 3-4 years.

When are the exams conducted?

The exams are conducted twice in a year. In India the exams are conducted in May/June and Oct/Nov.

How many attempts per paper can one take?

There are no restrictions on the number of attempts per paper.

Is it globally recognized?

Yes, it is a globally recognized course with mutual exemptions with a lot of other international actuarial institutes.

Are people with a mathematical background at an advantage?

A good grasp of basic mathematical/statistical concepts could prove beneficial. However, in the long run your hard work and dedication would count the most.

What is the pay package?

At entry level salary is approximately INR 4 lakh to 8 lakh per annum. After gaining experience of about 5 years and clearing a good number 15 papers, an actuary aspirant can earn anywhere between INR 12 lakh to 18 lakh per annum. Immediately after becoming a fellow of IAI, the pay package is approximately INR 20 lakh plus per annum.

Do I need to clear all 15 papers to get a job? Will I get time for exams while working?

One can start applying for the job after completion of under-graduation program and clearing at least 3 to 4 papers.
All actuarial companies encourages the employees to keep clearing exams. They provide financial help as well as give study holidays.
