While data is the new oil, mining and processing the oil, is like analytics. Analytics has evolved from being a mere buzzword to an essential business tool.<\/p>\n

From retail to banking, healthcare to the food industry and even police departments.. firms have realised the advantage of embracing analytics and that is a known fact. But how known is the fact that there\u2019s a shortage of talent in the industry? According to an article published in Harvard Business Review \u201cIn 2015, there was a surplus of people with data science skills. Now there\u2019s a\u00a0significant shortage<\/a>. By 2020, IBM expects broader demand for data and analytics talent to reach\u00a02.7 million positions in the U.S. alone<\/a>. In India, you ask? \u00a0Analytics, data science and the big data <\/a>industry in India is expected to grow seven times in the next seven years. It is estimated to become a 20-billion1<\/sup> dollar industry in India by 2025.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>Looking for some inspiration to join the ever-growing analytics industry? I call it a journey of five Rights<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.Right Path<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

It is an interesting time to be in analytics now but first things first \u2013 the field of analytics is multifaceted. Different terms like- Business Analytics<\/a> & Big Data or Data Analytics are used interchangeably. Different roles apply their skills in a different way although they may not use the same business tools. Identify the subcategory you fit the most into. We all remember the one which inspired many of us to move into analytics ~ the sexiest job of the 21st<\/sup> century <\/em>– yes I\u2019m referring to the role of a Data Scientist. If you already hold a statistics\/economics degree or a business degree you could fit into the role of a Predictive Analyst or a Business Analyst role quite easily. If coding is in your DNA and you are super comfortable with database modelling, warehouse and Machine Learning<\/a> algorithms you could eye a Big Data Analytics job. Below is a simple graph that outlines the various roles in the Analytics industry.<\/p>\n

2.Right Skills<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

There is no universally accepted skillset that companies look for. Having said that it’s essential to have an understanding of the required skills to thrive in a highly dynamic work environment. Breaking it down broadly two types of skill sets exist.<\/p>\n

It is especially true in today\u2019s age when industries are overlapping, sometimes you could probably get the best piece of advice from outside your industry. It might seem a daunting, an uphill task in the beginning but keep a growth mindset. It could be as simple as commenting on a LinkedIn article of a thought leader or sharing their article or even signing up for their newsletter or introducing others to their profile & content. 4. Right Resume<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

A recruiter on average spends only about 6 seconds scanning through a resume. In order to get the best out of it. Prepare a resume that is visually appealing. It should have a simple & clean layout, structured and without too many bullet points as that takes away the attention from the most important points. Before sending out the resume for any job, make sure to redesign your CV to incorporate what the job demands. Also, make sure to have an updated LinkedIn profile.<\/p>\n

5. Right passion<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure to enter the industry with the right passion. Famous businessman Nolan Bushnell once said, \u201cHire for passion and intensity, there is training for everything else\u201d. It is a true adage even today. The right passion will help you land the right job & help in sustaining it in the long term.<\/p>\n
