We\u2019ve tried to answer a few of these Critical questions regarding\u00a0<strong>Your Analytics Career<\/strong>\u00a0through this blog post.<\/p>\n<p>It has snippets from our recently concluded Webinar on \u201c Analytics for Beginners\u201d on 6th December 2015 by our Expert Subhajit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.What is Analytics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Simply put, it\u2019s the way we logically think while making decisions? Say, how do you decide which dress to buy when you are shopping in a mall? How do you come to a decision?<\/p>\n<p>We take decisions based on information \/ data available. You gather information \/ facts. Say there is a scenario where all the information \/ data are available. Then, do you have any risk in making a decision? However, the facts\/information are not available in entirety. Hence, there is a risk while making decision. Since info is not available readily, analytics helps to make decisions to minimize the risk of taking decision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Why is it important today?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Analytics is getting applied everywhere, in different industry sectors \u2013 example: retail, healthcare, finance, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Be it our online purchase from our favorite e-tailers\u00a0 Amazon or Flipkart, or watching the complex poll results during election, the crux of it all is Data. Data is available aplenty but what companies lack is insights from this Data. This is where a Data Scientist\u2019s role comes into the picture<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. What questions does Analytics answer?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Based on the type, it answers a variety of questions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; Descriptive Analytics<\/strong> &#8211; What is happening? \u2013 How do you do this? \u2013 You gather data, and based on which you make metrics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; Diagnostic Analytics<\/strong> &#8211; Why is whatever is happening?<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; Discovery Analytics<\/strong>&#8211; What types of insights can I draw from what and why? What kind of decision can I take<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; Predictive Analytics<\/strong> \u2013 What will happen next?<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; Prescriptive Analytics<\/strong> \u2013 What actions to take based on predictions? Recommendation to the business to take certain actions and the results thereon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. What are the skills required to fit in to \u201cAnalytics\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Analytics is a mixture of broad skills spectrum. One can add value in various different components of analytics.<\/p>\n<p>&gt; <strong>Data Preparation<\/strong> &#8211; Data is not structured most of the time. Weprocess the unstructured data to make them structured.\u00a0Skills required \u2013 SQL (very imp. \u2013 platform independent \u2013 most important language for data preparation)<\/p>\n<p>&gt; <strong>Diagnostic Analytics<\/strong> \u2013 What metrics can you build to draw information?Skills required \u2013 Should have analytical skills \u2013 logical thinking skills. Some questions to judge this skill:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ex \u2013 How many leaves are in a tree?<\/li>\n<li>Ex &#8211; All the cows are white in the world. How do you prove me wrong?<\/li>\n<li>Ex \u2013 How many new tyres are sold every year in India<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Suggestion to build logical thinking skill:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Start to question every business that you see around. Ex \u2013 when you go to a mall, analyze why some dresses \/ products are kept together. Analyze how the queue could be shortened. Think, how operations could be optimized, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; Predictive Analytics<\/strong> \u2013 What will happen in the future?\u00a0Skills Required \u2013 Typically, for the folks who have strong mathematical \/ statistical skills as it requires statistical analysis. A non-statistics \/ mathematical \/ engineering background person would need to learn these concepts thoroughly to be able to do predictive analytics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; Prescriptive Analytics<\/strong> \u2013 Optimize;\u00a0Skills Required \u2013 This again requires mathematical skills.<\/p>\n<p>Typically for Descriptive analytics general statistics skills are most important ex \u2013 What is Data, Frequency Distribution, Probability, Mean, Median, and Mode. For predictive Analytics the skills that are needed are Regression, Logistic, Factor, Linear \/ Non-Linear Optimization<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. What are most important tools used in Analytics today?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2666SAS<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 70% of businesses are still using SAS<\/p>\n<p>SAS Programming knowledge is required. You cant just rely on GUI version of SAS (Enterprise Guide).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2666R<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Since SAS is very costly (ex \u2013 50 Lakhs per year for server license of SAS), hence, R is becoming popular (R is open source \u2013 free).<\/p>\n<p>\u2666Analytics tools by IBM \u2013\u00a0<strong>SPSS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2666Data Visualization Tools \u2013\u00a0<strong>Tableau, Spotfire, Qlikview<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2666Excel<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 is still the most important tool used. You should be very good in Excel. You can do a lot of statistical analytics work on Excel.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022All features of Excel are important. Text, Character, Date, Optimization, LookUp, Pivot, etc.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022If you don\u2019t know Excel, it\u2019s very difficult to work in Analytics.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022How important is to know \/ learn VBA<\/p>\n<p>\u2212VBA is going to become one of the most sought after skills in analytics<\/p>\n<p>\u2013VBA is becoming famous because it automates various reporting processes and saves time.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013VBA helps to save time.
