(recently asked in an analytics job interview).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a classic estimation problem. There is a popular sampling method called capture &#8211; recapture or &#8216;Lincoln Index&#8217; or &#8216;Pieterson&#8217;s Method&#8217; which is used to estimate the size of an animal or human population. There are two versions of this method; we&#8217;ll discuss the simpler version (for the more complex version, please refer to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.in\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=3&amp;cad=rja&amp;ved=0CDQQFjAC&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rsscse-edu.org.uk%2Ftsj%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2011%2F03%2Fjohnson3.pdf&amp;ei=T45_UvPxL6HesATul4D4DQ&amp;usg=AFQjCNG8hwLTxO5kGJVmFvNyK8WolWAAug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this article<\/a>). The method goes like this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You first capture say 100 fishes (\u00a0<strong>c<\/strong>\u00a0) from the pond. You tag or colour them and return to the pond. So, if the total number of fishes in the pond is say (\u00a0<strong>N<\/strong>\u00a0), then the proportion of coloured fishes to the population is\u00a0<b>c \/ N<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>Now, again you fish and recapture a sample of say 100 fishes (\u00a0<strong>r<\/strong>\u00a0) from the pond. Out of which, say 10 (\u00a0<strong>t<\/strong>\u00a0) fishes are the coloured fishes that you had coloured or tagged in the first capture.<\/li>\n<li>Now, the proportion of the tagged fishes to the recaptured sample size is\u00a0<b>t\/r<\/b>\u00a0(10 \/ 100 = 10%). This, tagged to recapture sample (<strong>t\/r<\/strong>), proportion is considered equal to the original population propertion (<strong>c\/N<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>Hence,\u00a0<b>c \/ N = t \/ r .
